Labouring for the Lord

While the world celebrates Labour’s Day around the world on the 1st of May each year, it would be interesting to see what the Bible says about labourers and laboring.

To start off, let’s take a look at what “labour” means in the Bible.

The Hebrew word translated into “labour” in English comes from

The Greek word translated into “labour” in English comes from

The Bible tells us clearly what not to “labour” for. We are not to labour / strive/ go after

  1. KJV Proverbs 23:4-5 – Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.
  2. KJV John 6:27 – Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed

The Bible does not just leave us to our own thoughts as to what labouring for the Lord would cover. Here’s a few verses to point us in the right direction.

  1. John 4:37-38 Labour in the Gospel
  2. Matthew 11:28 – Heavy-laden (toiling) in the Gospel work. Rest is promised.
  3. Romans 16:6,23 – Labouring in services (hospitality, encouragement)
  4. Colossians 4:12 – Labouring/ striving in prayer
  5. 1 Timothy 5:17 – Labouring in the Word and Doctrine.

May the Love of Christ constrain us even to serve Him with joy.

Psalms 119:169-176 – Tau

ת Tau

169 Let my cry come near before thee, O Lord: give me understanding according to thy word.
170 Let my supplication come before thee: deliver me according to thy word.
171 My lips shall utter praise, when thou hast taught me thy statutes.
172 My tongue shall speak of thy word: for all thy commandments are righteousness.
173 Let thine hand help me; for I have chosen thy precepts.
174 I have longed for thy salvation, O Lord;and thy law is my delight.
175 Let my soul live, and it shall praise thee; and let thy judgments help me.
176 I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant; for I do not forget thy commandments.

Psalms 119:161-168- Schin

ש Schin

161 Princes have persecuted me without a cause: but my heart standeth in awe of thy word.
162 I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil.
163 I hate and abhor lying: but thy law do I love.
164 Seven times a day do I praise thee because of thy righteous judgments.
165 Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.
166 Lord, I have hoped for thy salvation, and done thy commandments.
167 My soul hath kept thy testimonies; and I love them exceedingly.
168 I have kept thy precepts and thy testimonies: for all my ways are before thee.
